Boxer Lenny Daws has appealed to the British Boxing Board of Control following his European light-welterweight title defeat in Italy.

The 34-year-old Morden fighter was beaten on points by Michele Di Rocco, despite cutting the Italian in the first round and putting him down in the final round.

Daws had hinted before the bout that home advantage may be difficult to overcome if it came down to points.

However, after the June 8 bout, his camp had new suspicions over activities in the Italian’s corner, and, after watching the bout on video, they have sent it to the board for examination.

Daws said: “When a boxer is cut, you can only put adrenaline and vaseline on it. Adrenaline is applied with a swab and is a clear liquid.

“The video shows the Italian corner putting a yellow substance on his cut and we believe it is glue.

“That is not allowed because it seals the cut and it is unlikely to open again.

“If it had, I think the fight would have been stopped and I would be European champion. It was a big cut too.

“Also, after a bout, a cut would normally be stitched but they put a big plaster on it instead – we think because it was so gunked up.

“We’re not sure about it, so that’s why we’ve sent the tape to the board to see if they think there is a case to answer.

“It may be that the Italians do things differently, or that they have done this before and got away with it.

“Mick Williamson, one of the great cutmen, was in Italy with us and he is convinced glue was used. “We just have to wait for an answer from the board.”
