Tremayne Gilling has vowed not to change a winning formula this summer as he sets about representing Great Britain on foreign soil for the first-time.

After two brief indoor meetings over 60m towards earlier this year Mitcham-based Gilling fine tuned his preparations for the upcoming outdoor season last month by jetting off to America.

The former Croydon College pupil spent three weeks across the pond in Los Angeles and is anticipating a return at the Surrey track & field Championships on May 14 or the Loughborough International a week later.

The 20-year-old underlined his potential last year by winning 100m gold at August’s England Senior Closed Championships while also taking over half a second off his personal best.

And Gilling believes the best way he can convert that into selection for July’s European U23 Championships, set to be held in Ostrava, is by not altering anything.

“It would be amazing to go to the European Under-23s, I have never competed in a foreign country for Great Britain and it will be my first major championship,” said Gilling, who is part of the Spar Sprints Programme for 2011.

“So it will be amazing to get on the team but that isn’t just what I want. If I get out there I want to do well and medal and just keep developing as an athlete.

“It was good going out to America to get some training done and it is the third time I have been out there.

I was just mainly training and getting some sun and warm weather into my body.

“Last year I had a wicked season and I am trying to keep everything the same. I am trying not to change too much apart from working on my weaker areas.

“It is hard to say where I am until I have raced. My strengths and weaknesses are different to those in training and those in competitions. So once I get my first race over I will sit down and look at it all.”

In order to guarantee himself a ticket to the Czech Republic Gilling must hit the 100m qualifying standard of 10.40seconds and win the trial event in June.

Gilling lowered his personal best from 10.76 to 10.25 last year and while he can’t give an assessment of his current status he believes qualification is more than possible.

“My aims for the summer have always been to get to the European Under-23s and to hopefully medal there. The standard is 10.40 and if season goes similar to last year I should achieve it,” he added.

“I did a relay race out in America and I am almost ready to compete but I don’t know what the plan is just yet. I am going to play things by ear before the trials, I may do a few races but I will see how my body is.”
