I was pleased to have the opportunity to show my 10-year old a ballot box and talk about Emily Davison’s life and death whilst looking at the designs on show earlier this month.

We spent a while considering the various designs before casting our votes. My daughter favoured the representative design supplied by Surrey blacksmiths, which included some lettering, whilst I preferred the sculpture of an Edwardian lady.

I also fancied the more abstract, metal spiral design which featured an attached hat.

As a former government statistician, who always had to publish the statistics, I am at best perplexed (and at worst definitely dismayed) at the lack of information from the council on the date announced for the result of the public vote.

We haven’t even been told how many votes were cast – is this because there were only a few hundred?

If there was such a low "urn-out then the vote was almost certainly not representative of the wishes of local people.

Also if the votes cast were low, it is not surprising that two designs had similar numbers of supporters. Perhaps the result was influenced by the way the candidates publicised the vote themselves?

If art college lecturers encourage students to vote when they went to the library to check their emails that might explain the choice of the two modern and abstract designs.

If either of the designs that were ‘top’ in the vote is installed I don’t think anyone passing the roundabout would have a clue that they were commemorating the fight for women’s suffrage and Emily Davison’s death.

It is disappointing that neither the council (whose budget was limited), or local media really publicised the opportunity for local residents to vote.

I saw very few people even stopping to look at the proposals. Yet we are likely to have the result of this ‘vote’ with us for many years to come.

I have emailed my local councillor asking what the total number of votes cast is. I wait to see if the council is willing to let us know even this single statistic – more than a week after the pre-announced date for the result!
