Zac Goldsmith looks set to stay as a Kingston MP with Edward Davey keeping New Malden as the Liberal Democrats vow to ditch changes to constituencies.
The dropping of the plans is revenge for the Conservatives failing to deliver on reform of the House of Lords.
The proposals would have been part of the biggest shake-up in a quarter of a century moving parts of north Kingston back into Edward Davey’s Kingston and Surbiton constituency from Richmond.
A new constituency of New Malden and Wimbledon would have been carved out of both MPs seats by 2015.
Mr Davey said he thought it was reasonable for the Lib Dems to respond to the Tories by preventing the boundary changes.
He said: “This is how coalitions sometimes have to settle differences so we can govern on other issues effectively, most importantly the economy.
“It looks like the next election will be fought on existing boundaries, and no change there may be welcomed most by voters."
