A great-granddad is a one man army spreading joy in the borough by singing on Croydon buses.

Kenneth Smith, 73, regularly cheers up passengers on the borough's bus routes, by bursting into his favourite songs.

The 73-year-old of Haling Road, South Croydon said he refused to get old and enjoyed cheering up other pensioners with his singing.

Mr Smith, a former trainer for the British Red Cross, said: "I chat up all the other pensioners at the parties and if they look gloomy I sing to them."

The self-confessed chatterbox says he still has a twinkle in his eye and doesn't look his age because he walks two or three miles a day.

Mr Smith, who has lived in Croydon since 1973, said he is well known in the area for giving renditions to gloom bus passengers.

He said: "I walk on to a full bus and people are looking gloomy, so I say 'Come on wake up, you will make the milk curdle and then of course I burst into song, and then I get them all bouncing about."

Last week the Crystal Palace fan was crowned LBC 97.3's caller of the week after his contribution to the discussion on whether society patronised the elderly, left the shows presenter "beside himself with joy."

LBC 97.3 James O'Brien said: "Kenneth is clearly one of those people who spread a bit of happiness wherever they wander.

"For me, the loveliest thing about his call was the number of people who got in touch afterwards to say that they had both encountered and enjoyed his crooning on a bus in Croydon."
