Delays and cancellations suffered by train commuters through Wimbledon this morning were not related to engineering works in January and February that forced passengers onto replacement buses, South West Trains has said.

Passengers going into and out of London this morning experienced once again the misery of cramped trains and busy platforms.

Emergency engineering work to repair two sections of track, near Earlsfield and east of Wimbledon, will be completed tonight.

From this morning: Emergency engineering work causes South West Trains delays through Wimbledon

A spokesman for the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance said: "We are very sorry for the inconvenience to passengers this morning.

"This was caused by emergency engineering work to the track in two locations, one near Earlsfield station and the other well to the east of Wimbledon station.

"The affected parts of the track will be replaced tonight.

"The issues this morning are completely unrelated to the upgrade work which took place in January and February, which involved replacing a dozen sets of points to the west of Wimbledon station.

"This project was a key part of our ongoing works to improve reliability and catch up on years of under investment while carrying over half a million passengers every day."
