I was very saddened to read in last week’s Comet of the decision by some schools to cancel prearranged visits to a local synagogue (Victory for extremism, February 6).

Whether this decision was taken on purely security grounds or whether, as Rabbi Landau said in his letter, the reason for the cancellation was “fear of association with Jews” I do not know, but it sends quite the wrong message – undoubtedly a “victory for extremism”.

I do not suppose Rabbi Landau’s morale was improved either by the advertisement headline “Who is Muhammad?” and the related items.

We live in dangerous and sensitive times, but I do hope the schools concerned will feel able to accept any invitation to visit a synagogue should one be offered in the future.

Additionally, although I appreciate the value to the Comet of advertising space, would it not be wise in the current climate to avoid publishing material produced by religious organisations?
