A Chessington mum had a surprise on Christmas morning after giving birth to a baby boy.

Rebecca Smith gave birth to 10lb Rowan William James Hodgson at 4:33am on December 25.

Miss Smith was woken up at 2am on Christmas morning by her eldest son who was not feeling well. After comforting her son she started to feel a little bit unwell herself. Miss Smith said: "I had a bit of a back ache and then it got gradually worse. I realised I must be going into labour so we rushed straight to Kingston Hospital."

Miss Smith and Rowan’s father Russell Hodgson got to the hospital at 3:30am.

"We got to the hospital and just over an hour later Rowan was born. It was a really quick birth and I couldn’t believe it.

"I had originally been due to give birth on the 22nd so I knew he was coming very soon but it was still a surprise that it was Christmas morning."

Baby Rowan William James Hodgson arrived three days later than expected

Miss Smith and Mr Hodgson said that since getting Rowan home he has been just as easy going as his birth.

Miss Smith said: "We haven’t had any troubles yet. He’s been a very content and relaxed baby so far."

It was a relatively quieter Christmas Day for Kingston Hospital's maternity ward, with just five festive arrivals this year, compared to nine in 2013.
