The guessing game has begun again for young parents, as another free school is proposed for a so-far-unknown location in the borough.

Last night education company GEMS held a drop-in session to tell parents about its plans for a new free primary school “in the Surbiton/Tolworth border”.

Learning director Terri de Quincey said GEMS had been in discussion with Kingston Council over the move for some months.

She said: “It is about proving there is a real need in the area, and resources are in short supply.

“We need to plan for that now. We have started now engaging with the community.”

She told parents: “It is going to be a flagship school. I would be very hands-on with this school – I am very much in tune with the way my grandchildren are this age.

“It is a very live issue for me too.”

GEMS and the council must convince the Department for Education of the need for more primary places, in order to secure funding for the proposed school.

It would open in 2015, for two reception classes of 30 pupils.

Ash Pajpani, from GEMS, said: “No sites have been identified. That is a process we will work out with the council and the Department for Education.”

The company owns and runs 46 schools around the world, including in the United Arab Emirates.
