An unexploded grenade was blown up in a controlled explosion by the Surbiton riverside this evening.
The loud boom at about 8pm surprised nearby residents while neighbouring roads were cordoned off for the detonation.
A police officer in Portsmouth Road said a hand grenade had been found by a person with a metal detector.
The riverside was closed off about an hour before the explosion.
Portsmouth Road re-opened shortly afterwards.
