A young designer from West Molesey has taken the London fashion scene by storm, with a New York rapper already wearing some of her designs.

Mayada Khammu, 24, only graduated from university this autumn, and has wasted no time in releasing a womenswear collection being worn by up and coming music star Angel Haze.

Ms Khammu was smuggled out of Iraq at the age of three, and has lived in south-west London ever since.

Her East meets West-themed collection, called Young Blood, blends her Bedouin heritage with life in the English capital.

It also takes inspiration from the Arab Spring.

Ms Khammu said: “As a Jordanian living in London, I had the perfect opportunity to use my creativity to express my feelings about the changes taking place as a result of the Arab Spring.

“I used prints of Saddam Hussein and Colonel Gaddafi and entitled them The Fallen because, one by one, these terrible figures built themselves up and, one by one, they have been overthrown by their people.”

She unveiled the collection at London Fashion Week’s largest independent showcase, Vauxhall Fashion Scout, earlier in the autumn.
