Garrison Lane roadworks running late

The redevelopment of Garrison Lane is running late.

The repairs began in August and final road resurfacing was meant to take place in half-term week of October.

But progress has slowed due to extreme wet weather and the current date for completion is now early November, Kingston Council said.

The works are budgeted to cost £588,550.

Phase 4 of the reconstruction works was split up into two sections (4a and 4b) and this was done to try to minimise access problems for residents that may have arisen on such a long section of the road.

The Phase 4a works extended from the junction with Green Lane up as far as 26/28 Garrison Lane and started the week commencing 13 September.

Unfortunately at the start of the works the contractor had problems with shallow utility ducts crossing the road. The programme of work had to be adjusted to allow these to be lowered. There were also problems as a result of the wet weather disrupting the works.

The Phase 4a works were completed early in October, which was a week later than anticipated. At the same time as the Phase 4a works the contractor constructed the new footway parking areas in the vicinity of Bransby Road.

Phase 4b covers the section of Garrison Lane from No 26/28 up to the junction with Crayke Hill and work commenced here on the week commencing 4 October. The excavation of the existing road exposed further areas of very poor ground beneath.

The situation was exacerbated by the poor weather, which saturated the clay and required additional excavation in some areas. The combination of weather and extra dig has delayed the road surfacing works, which was completed last weekend.

During the Phase 4b works the contractor has continued to use an additional gang to move forward with the footway works from Reynolds Avenue (west end) across towards Selby Close.

It is proposed to start the Phase 5 works this week and these works cover the section from the junction with Crayke Hill to the junction with Selby Close. The extent of the works at the west end will be arranged so that there is always access into and out of Selby Close.

The current programmed date for completion of these works is early November.
