Miley Cyrus may be a teen sensation these days but she didn't always have it so good.

The Hannah Montana star has admitted in a new book that she was bullied as a kid living in Tennessee and describes her pre-teen years as "friendless, lonely and miserable".

"The girls took it beyond normal bullying. These were big, tough girls," Miley writes of the bullies, who she refers to as "the Anti-Miley Club".

"I was scrawny and short. They were fully capable of doing me bodily harm.

"Classmates would say, 'Your dad's a one-hit wonder. You'll never amount to anything - just like him,'" adds Miley, about her country singer dad Billy Ray.

However, Miley reckons her tough school years made her a stronger person in the long run.

"I didn't dare forget the struggle. There was a reason for it. I brought that girl with me, and she reminds me to be compassionate," she writes.

"To not hold grudges. To be supportive. To be there for others when I know I'm needed."
