Former Cobham RFC youngster Jack Clifford is in line to make his senior England debut when the Six Nations start this weekend.

The 22-year-old Harlequin has been named in head coach Eddie Jones’ 23-man squad for his side’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

He will start the match on the bench with clubmates number six Chris Robshaw, scrum half Danny Care, full back Mike Brown and prop Joe Marler all starting Jones’ first match in charge.

Clifford, a former England U20s captain, who has also spent time on loan at National Division One Esher, played for Cobham’s junior section up until the U18 age group at which point he switched to the Quins academy.

His England U18s shirt is displayed on the Fairmile Lane club’s clubhouse wall alongside one of former director of rugby Billy Davison’s England A jerseys.

Quins director of rugby Conor O’Shea added: “We love to see our players playing international rugby.

“The likes of Tony Diprose and Jim Evans, who have been with him all the way, will be so proud if he makes it on to the pitch.

“Hopefully, it will be the first of many appearances for England because he is some player.”

Quins crashed Newcastle Falcons 26-19 on Sunday in the absence of their England stars, with a Charlie Walker double and one from Dave Ward not good enough for a win in the north-east.

Northampton Saints, who lost at home to Wasps last week, visit the Stoop tomorrow with O’Shea expecting veteran number eight Nick Easter to return to the fold.

“This one is going to be massive,” added O’Shea.

“They have finished in the top four for five years in a row and they have had a really good run in Europe.

“Every team has days like they did against Wasps.”

He added: “I was disappointed for our players on Sunday, but we’ll right a few wrongs from that game.”
