Harlequins’ Mike Brown is relatively inexperienced as an international full back but he says his schooling at the Stoop makes him a go-to man for club and country.

The 28-year-old was named man of the match in England’s 20-13 triumph over Australia at Twickenham in a rare international start in his favoured position on home soil.

Brown has worn the 15 shirt with distinction for Quins, but it has taken him until now to make the position his own for his country.

His performance on Saturday proved the catalyst for his side to come back from 13-6 down through tries from Chris Robshaw and Owen Farrell.

And he admitted his showing was one born out of his role as one of Quins director of rugby Conor O’Shea’s most trusted on-field lieutenants.

“I am one of the older ones at Quins, just as I am in this squad, and I have to step forward as a leader,” he said.

“I’m not a vocal guy, so I try and do it with my actions, which I think I’m doing at the moment.

“Full back is my prefered position and that is where I can do the most damage.

“I love playing at 15, but to play any game in the white shirt is a dream come true.

“I learn so much from playing on the wing, but it was great to get a run at 15 and do well. I’ve got to work harder to stay there.”

And Brown conceded he had room for improvement ahead of Saturday’s clash with Argentina.

“There’s still a few areas I need to look at. I rode my luck a few times,” he added.
