Wilson: Welsh must build on this season

Danny Wilson hopes London Welsh’s play-off heroics will lead to a golden era at Old Deer Park, despite the Dragons missing out on their Guinness Premiership dream.

Welsh were beaten 28-15 at favourites Bristol on Friday night in their Championship semi-final, bringing to an end a fairytale run that saw them win their final three group games.

And Wilson sees no reason why this cannot be a launchpad for further success.

He said: “We are in a position now where we have established ourselves as a top four side and that is a great achievement.

“With the season we have had it should be a lot easier to attract quality players to the club as we have put ourselves on the rugby map again in a way.

“When you consider all the off-the-field problems we have faced this year, with administration, the players wondering whether they would be paid, the points deduction and the like it has been a mammoth effort from everybody.

“Now we have to look to next season and the key will be for us to put together a squad that can at least live to the same standard we reached this campaign.”

Despite tries from Dominic Shabbo and Errie Claassens the Dragons were unable to spring a shock at the Memorial Ground.

But Wilson had nothing but praise for his troops.

He added: “Bristol just wore us down and you could see it was a case of one game too far for us.

“We played really well and led for most of the first half and scored some good tries.

“But the physical edge took its toll and although we hung in there we just could not match them in that department.

“It was still an immense performance from us and the players can go away for the summer proud of what they achieved.”
