The man who secured London Scottish survival on Saturday is not even certain of a future in professional rugby.

Centre Charlie Hayter’s interception score secured the bonus-point try that saved the Exiles from the Championship chop in front of more than 2,000 fans at the Athletic Ground.

Scottish lost 31-26 to Esher, but survived the relegation play-offs by a single point ahead of their visitors at the weekend.

Hayter arrived on a dual-registration loan deal from Worcester Warriors in December and scored seven tries in 13 appearances for the Exiles – none more important than his seventh.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at Sixways at the end of the Premiership season and admitted he had no idea where his future lay.

But saving the Exiles may yet prove to be the making of the man who has become well acquainted with life on the road since switching to west London.

“I live in Stratford-upon-Avon and that is an hour-and-a-half down the M40 on a good run, but coming to Scottish was the best move I’ve ever made,” said Hayter, who was on loan at Nottingham earlier in the campaign.

“To be playing regularly in my favourite position has been brilliant.

“Playing week in, week out in the pressure situations like this has helped massively with the development of my game.

“It was a great feeling to get the try, but I was just the lucky one in the right place to get it. The forward pack were outstanding and gave us the platform.

“What we have achieved is thoroughly deserved for all the hard work the guys have put in on Monday and Wednesday nights. We’ve earned ourselves another shot at Championship rugby.

“I’m a free agent in the summer, so I don’t really know what the situation is.

“I’ve got to sit down, look at my options and hopefully something will be sorted out.”
