Schmid moves up stairs in sweeping changes at Esher

Esher director of rugby Mike Schmid has moved up stairs to become the club's first chief executive in the wake of the club's relegation from the Championship last week.

The former Canadian international, who takes over the complete running of the club, had been in charge of on-field matters at Molesey Road for seven years.

Dropping into National Division One has meant a near £400,000 cut in revenue for Esher - thanks largely to a reduction in central funding from the RFU - sparking a major review of the club's structure, a process announced last week by chairman John Inverdale.

Inverdale has since confirmed the club are in the hunt for a new head coach as Esher adjust to life at a lower level.
