The eagerly anticipated Banger World Series attracted a record crowd to Wimbledon stadium last weekend.

With an automatic place on the world final grid in October, more than 70 of the country’s top drivers descended on the capital, all looking for that elusive wild card spot.

Former world champion Jason "Boxer Jack" Jackson won the first heat, with Shayne Winsor winning the second.

With the stakes so high, and more than 50 cars on the grid, the main wild card race was always going to be a healthy combination of wrecking and racing.

So it proved to be, reviving memories of when the banger world final was held at Plough Lane.

At the end of the race that included just about everything, it was "Boxer Jack" who stormed across the line to take the chequered flag and secure his place on the world final grid.

Boxer’s night became even more memorable as he then went onto win the showdown race. By winning both of the featured races, the star driver picked up a £1,500 bonus.

The action this Sunday is a varied four formula spectacular. First up after an absence of almost two months, are the powerful superstox.

They are the latest formula to contest their London Championship around the Plough Lane oval.

Just who will win, well you can never discount the likes of world champion Steven Jackson, Jason Cooper and Billy Smith.

The 1,300cc Stock cars have been seen far more recently here at Wimbledon, visiting just a few weeks ago.

Last year’s series winner, Ian Beaumont will be looking for a good start to his season but faces a tough challenge from the likes of Mitcham’s Jimmy Morris.

The rookie rods with a good field of cars wherever they race, make for some great close, non-contact racing.

Matthew Farren is the talk of the formula currently after a superb hat trick of wins in mid-January.

Finally the crash happy bangers are in action once again, as their track championship enters its twilight period for the season.

This can only mean more entertaining action as drivers do everything they can to pick up as many valuable points as possible, whether it is racing to a race win or by taking out as many of the opposition as possible.

Racing starts at 5.30pm with turnstiles open at 4.30pm.
