Saved bowling club after new members
12:34pm Thursday 1st March 2012 in Bowls By Graham Moody, Sports Reporter
Merton Park Bowling Club are on the lookout for new members after being saved from closure this season.
The 86-year-old club, based in Jon Innes Park and Recreation Ground in Mostyn Road, feared before Christmas they would be forced to close due to cuts in the council budget.
But they have now been told their immediate future is safe, although the council is still considering changes to bowling greens throughout Merton, and would welcome some new additions to their set up.
“Exercise and fresh air are very important as people get older,” said member Ted Wood.
“And bowls is one of the few sporting activities that many older people can partake in.
“We have come and try evenings on Wednesdays throughout the season and would welcome people to come and have a go on Monday and Friday afternoons too.”
Equipment and coaching is available and the first session is free, with the club having separate ladies and gentleman clubs and the season set to start at the end of April.
If you are interested in joining, then contact Derek Cox for men’s bowling on 020 8542 2174 or ewehurst@tiscali. co.uk, and Lesly Trodd for ladies’ bowling on 020 8540 8490 or leslyt@morden66. freeserve.co.uk.
