Sutton United manager Paul Doswell is ruing the timing of their Surrey Senior Cup final against Woking following their 3-1 win against Corinthian Casuals last night, writes Thomas Anstey.

“I’m not sad to win put it that way,” said Doswell.

“It’s a strange situation because if we were to win our play-off game and we ended up in the final, that means the cup final will be the Tuesday prior to that.

“It’ll be difficult, but we take the competition seriously and we’re looking to put out the best possible team that we can that night.

“We’ve got 18-19 players, so we’ve got a big enough squad to cope with the two games. We’ve got two or three really good players coming through the reserves Matt Reece being one. I think we’ve got a really good chance.”

The semi-final clash on Tuesday night against Corinthian Casuals saw a more than casual performance from Sutton.

Craig Watkins scored for the U’s in the opening minutes, but they were lacklustre in the first half and the home team got back on terms before Sutton stepped up the pace after the break to win with well-worked goals by Michael Boateng and Harry Beatyman.

“By all accounts, we didn’t really play great until the last 30 minutes,” added Doswell.

“We didn’t play our best on the night by all accounts, but the most important thing is that we made the final.

“It’ll be an excellent game against Woking, they’ve deservedly won this league. I think it’ll be a nice celebration for their supporters on the night and from our point of view I think we’ve had an unbelievable season as well."

With only a couple of games to go before the end of the regular season, the United manager will be looking to keep momentum going into the play-off finals, but he is also aware that it’s still not a guarantee.

Doswell said: “Technically we still need a point to guarantee the play-offs. It would take an extraordinary series of results for us not to get in though.

"I think Dartford are the strongest team probably followed by Welling. The three or four in there certainly deserve a shot at it, but I think Dartford are the strong favourites.

“Momentum is always important going into the play-offs. I think they’ll both be competitive games and certainly we’d like to end the season well and go into the playoffs with a good mindset."

Sutton travel to Salisbury on Saturday.
