Kingstonian boss Tommy Williams has never reached the FA Cup first round proper as a player and is out to break that duck now he is a manager.

Ks travel to Ryman Division One South Horsham tomorrow in the first qualifying round on the back of their first defeat of the season after crashing 4-1 at Ryman Premier League leaders Maidstone United on Tuesday night.

And Williams wants his men to rid themselves of that memory with victory in west Sussex.

“It is a great competition and a welcome break from league action,” he said.

“We are taking it very seriously this season. A cup run can lift the club and the whole town itself.

“We’ve had them watched because we know this is a potential banana skin and we need to be mentally right for the game otherwise we could come unstuck.

“I’ve been in the hat for the first round before, but never played in it because we lost our fourth qualifying round replay.

“Every manager and player wants to make a name for themselves in the cup.”

Striker Andre McCollin scored a double as Ks came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Hendon at Kingsmeadow on Saturday.

He was on the scoresheet again in Tuesday’s reverse, but it was the only highlight in a miserable second half for Ks.

“It is a difficult place to go, but we could have been leading at half-time. We played well,” added Williams.

“The second 45 minutes was probably our worst in nine games so far.

“We have to draw a line under that and move on. It is out of the way now.”
