Spurs complete Premier League invasion at Ks
Premier League giants Chelsea, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur are all the incentive any player should need to sign for Kingstonian this summer, according to boss Alan Dowson.
The top flight trio top the list of big name visitors to Kingsmeadow this pre-season after all three clubs agreed to play friendly clashes with Ks this week.
Dowson is busy piecing together a squad to challenge for Ryman Premier League promotion this term and bumper crowds for the three clashes should swell the club’s coffers.
Spurs kick-off the tempting triple of matches on July 16, with Fulham visiting on July 27 and Champions of Europe Chelsea making the trip to Jack Goodchild Way on August 11 – a week before the Premier League season kicks-off.
“If anyone can get a better pre-season fixture list than that, then I will be amazed,” said Dowson.
“I’m buzzing. I could care less about the Ryman League fixtures, which come out next week. It is all about these three for me.
“They may not bring their best teams, but the timings of the games should mean one or two stars might need a run out.
“In five years here, I haven’t felt better about pre-season.
“Not many people get to play football against the top teams in Europe and that could be the little pull that one or two players need to put pen to paper.”
Chelsea last featured at Kingsmeadow when their reserve team were based at the club between 1992 and 2000, while Fulham – skippered by Clint Dempsey – were 8-0 winners when they played a friendly at the ground in 2008.
Dowson’s assistant coach and Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has been influential in the bagging the three games, but a chance meeting with former Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell on a Spanish golf course helped Dowson get the ball rolling – and landlords AFC Wimbledon have also played their part.
“The Dons are a credit to football for helping us host these games,” said Dowson.
“The board has been patient about this and we have delivered.”
