Bids for players in the January transfer window is a symptom of a club’s success, says Brentford head coach Dean Smith.

The Griffin Park chief confirmed this week that bids from Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday for defender James Tarkowski and midfielder Alan Judge, respectively, had been rejected.

And Smith warned any other suitors that Brentford are not in a position where they need to sell their star men.

“We’ve had bids for Judgey and James, but we turned them down," he said.

“We are in a position where we do not need to sell our players. We want to keep our best players at the football club.

“While other clubs from the same league as us might be interested, our remit is to keep our best players and to keep improving.”

Wanted man: Brentford defender James Tarkowski, in action last season against Wigan Athletic, has many admirers

Brentford host Smith’s former club League One Walsall in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday and he is hoping for a warm reception from the away fans.

“It was inevitable that we would draw them and it should be a good game,” he added.

“I’m not sure of the reception I will get, but I hope it is a good one and I hope they appreciate what we did there in taking the club from the bottom of the league to near the top."

He added: “We’ve got a run of three home games in six games and squad rotation is something I will have to look at.

“But I want to win the game and we want to get through to the next round, so we will be putting out as strong a side as we can.”
