Bees boss Mark Warburton cursed his side’s wastefulness in front of goal and an inspired display from Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies as Brenford saw their five-match winning streak ended in west Yorkshire on Saturday.

A Sean Scannell strike and a Jake Bidwell own goal secured the Terriers a 2-1 Championship win on Saturday, despite a frantic final 20 minutes set-up by midfielder Jonathan Douglas’ fourth goal of the season.

Smithies denied Alan Judge, Douglas and substitute Tommy Smith in the closing stages, while Brentford had a strong penalty claim turned down in injury time when replacement Nick Proschwitz was seemingly felled in the box.

Town boss Chris Powell also saw his keeper deny Judge and Alex Pritchard in the first half and Warburton insisted his men would learn from the experience.

“We were not clinical enough,” said the manager.

“There were a couple of great saves from their keeper but we have not taken our chances and we paid the price.”

He added: “We will respond straight away by working hard on Monday and being ready for Blackburn Rovers next week.

“There were lots of positives, but the fact is we came away without any points. We have to look at why and learn from it.

“We were convinced it was a penalty, unfortunately it was not given and that will not change now.

“I know Chris [Powell] very well and he is a very experienced manager. I’m delighted for him and I’ve no doubt he’ll do a good job here.

“But I thought we did enough to deserve something out of the game.”

Warburton was named manager of the month for November on Friday after completing the month with a perfect winning record, but watched as his men failed to secure a sixth straight win on Saturday..

Brentford always looked a threat - particularly through Judge and Pritchard in the first half - but it was the hosts who got themselves in front and were ultimately worth the three points.

Scannell, a constant threat throughout, opened the scoring on 18 minutes, when he slammed home from close range at the far post soon after Judge's deflected effort had seen Smithies make his first save of the afternoon.

Brentford made a poor start to the second half when Bidwell turned the ball into his own net minutes after the break and it looked as though Huddersfield would run away with it.

But a 69th minute double substitution saw the introduction of Smith and Proschwitz - for Toumani Diagouraga and Andre Gray - and it was the former who set up Douglas to hit his side’s only goal a minute later.

Judge fired wide when well placed with 13 minutes remaining and the same player was denied from a free kick he won himself by man of the match Smithies.

The 24-year-old saved from Smith from the resulting corner and Douglas was also denied from close range in a frantic finale, which included a strong penalty shout when Proschwitz was felled in the box at the death.

Team: Button, Odubajo, Craig, Dean, Bidwell, Douglas, Diagouraga (Smith 69), Pritchard, Toral (Dallas 52), Judge, Gray (Proschwitz 69).
