Stuart Cash believes Jack Midson will better his AFC Wimbledon goal tally this season after committing his future to the club.

The striker signed an improved contract at the Dons on Tuesday to ward off several other clubs, including Rotherham, that had been sniffing around the 28-year-old.

Midson scored 20 goals in his debut Wimbledon campaign last season, equalling his best ever return during a season, and assistant manager Cash is adamant he can surpass that this time around.

“We are hopeful that, with better quality players, Jack will get even more goals this season,” he said.

“If he, and us as a team, can get that goal tally up then we will be a force to be reckoned with in League Two.

“It’s really pleasing Jack stayed as, although we are looking to rebuild the team, it was important we kept our best players.

“It is important for the club because last season we lost Danny Kedwell, Steven Gregory and Kaid Mohamed and we didn’t want that again – and already this summer both Sammy Moore and now Jack have signed improved terms.

“Jack had a few clubs interested in him and he could have moved and jumped ship, but has stayed.”

Midson putting pen-to-paper means only Seb Brown and Luke Moore, left, remain to sign improved contracts with both in discussions with the board ahead of the start of pre-season on July 2.

Manager Terry Brown has offered a left back a deal, believed to be former Brentford defender Sam Wood, and are hopeful of an answer this week, while the Dons are still waiting to hear back from a central defender.

Brown has offered a trial to 23-year-old Australian goalkeeper Ben McNamara, but it is the other targets that has assistant Cash's attention.

“The centre half is still away and we are still waiting to get a decision there,” said Cash.

“We had a left back in this week and we should know by Friday at the latest with him, hopefully, we will get that final yes and we can go ahead with medicals and things.”

Wimbledon will begin this season at home to Chesterfield, relegated from League One last season, on August 18 after the fixtures were announced on Monday.

The Dons host Northampton Town on Boxing Day, travel to Torquay United on New Year’s Day and round the season off on April 27 at home to Football League new boys Fleetwood Town.
