AFC Wimbledon could be set for a massive clear out of players next week as Terry Brown aims to turn the Dons into a promotion force next season.

Only five of the current squad are contracted beyond this summer with the Dons having an option on all of their other players – meaning the club can extend their deals if they want to.

But a number of names are likely to join James Mulley, Lee Minshull, Max Porter and Ryan Jackson – who were all told in January they would not be kept – on the scrapheap.

Brown was meeting with the Dons board yesterday to discuss plans for the summer and will meet with each player individually between Saturday’s final League Two game at home to Shrewsbury Town and May 19 – the deadline for them to take up options in League Two.

“During the board meeting we were due to discuss what the plans are for next year and part of that was to be who goes and who stays,” said Brown before the meeting.

“There are one or two players that will be given the chance again to impress on Saturday and then we will speak to the players once the season has finished as you cannot let players know they are going and then expect them to run through a brick wall for you against a very good Shrewsbury Town side on Saturday.

“Next Monday is a bank holiday so black Monday has been put off for a bit.

“Our deadline in League Two is May 19 to take up options on our players so we have a little bit more time to explore our options.”

Two players sweating on their futures, Ricky Wellard and Christian Jolley, will be unable to state their case on Saturday after suffering hamstring injuries in the 4-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Barnet last weekend.

Gareth Gwillim is also missing having not trained for a week due to a virus.
