Sutton United boss Paul Doswell cut a forlorn figure after a second consecutive 1-0 defeat on the road when luck deserted the side.

Saturday’s narrow defeat at Wrexham leaves United 15th in the National League table ahead of Braintree Town’s visit to Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night.

United went down in Wales to a solitary second half strike, having hit the woodwork twice and had an effort cleared off the line in a one-sided first half.

It came on the back of a similar story to the 1-0 defeat at Gateshead the weekend before.

Doswell said: “We feel hard done by – it’s the second manager on the trot who has come to us saying we were unlucky not to win the game.

“We’ve got to make the chances tell, we’ve hit the post and the bar, had one cleared off the line, and they’ve had one shot the whole game.

“It’s a disappointing afternoon and I feel sorry for the boys, they put in a great shift, especially in the first half, I thought they were outstanding and played some great football.

“We lost our way trying to get the equaliser because you end up pushing and doing the things you really don’t have to do. You end up panicking and going long, and that is not really us.”

He added: “We worked all week on getting our midfielders into the box more, and I thought that worked well and we caused them problems all afternoon.

“I cannot remember Ross [Worner] having a save to make, and their crowd booed them off at half-time and they also booed them off at the end, so that gives you an idea of what they thought of the performance if not the result.

“If there is a plus it is getting Dan Wishart on for 15 to 20 minutes, but the over-riding feeling is it there is a four hour journey to come and we’re disappointed.”
