Goalkeeper Mark Smith made his Brentford first team debut in the 3-0 win over Sporting Clube Farense in Portugal on Tuesday night and is hoping to keep the feel good factor going, writes Andrew Fitzsimons.

The 19-year-old Feltham shot-stopper gave a solid account of himself after playing the second half of the Bees’ pre-season opener against the Portuguese Segunda Liga side at the Estadio da Nora – the home of Futebol Club Ferreiras.

Smith, who signed a one-year deal at the club this summer, was a specatator as second half goals from development squad striker Jermaine Udumaga, Andre Gray and Jonathan Douglas secured the win.

Goalkeeper David Button remains Brentford's first choice but Smith says he is ready to step into his shoes when required.

“It’s been a good experience to travel with the team to Portugal – not least of all the weather," he said.

"As with any pre-season, there are always new players coming into the squad, so it’s a good team building exercise.

"It’s also an opportunity for players to acclimatise themselves with the manager’s new training techniques and pattern of play.

“As a goalkeeper, I am of course pleased that I managed to keep a clean sheet and the team won 3-0. At the end of the day, confidence breeds success, and the morale in the camp is very positive, which certainly bodes well for the new season."

With four pre-season friendlies remaining versus Boreham Wood, Stoke City, Luton Town and Norwich City, Smith will be hoping he’s shown enough quality and composure to prove himself again before the season kicks off on August 8 against Ipswich Town.
