Wayne Hennessey hopes to build on his first Premier League start of the year by being selected again in Crystal Palace’s season finale against Swansea.

The 28-year-old replaced Julian Speroni between the sticks in Palace’s 3-1 win against Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

It was just the second time Hennessey has started a league game since joining Palace early in 2014 and the first occasion this season.

His only other Premier League action in this campaign came when he replaced the injured Speroni in the second half of a 2-2 draw at West Brom in October.

Hennessey, though, wants to build on his performance at Liverpool by starting against Swansea at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

“It was a great feeling,” the goalkeeper said after playing in Steven Gerrard’s last match at Anfield.

“It was quite nice to keep him (Gerrard) out but hopefully he had a great day overall.

Liverpool fan Kelly hails the Crystal Palace character

“I got told I was playing on Friday. It was nice, especially against Liverpool.

“The manager gave me the nod to go out and impress and I’m really happy with the performance.”

On whether he will play on Sunday, Hennessey added: “We will have a look at nearer the time and the gaffer will make the decision.”

Hennessey paid tribute to Palace’s defence at Anfield for the way in which they kept Liverpool at bay.

It was an unfamiliar line-up for Alan Pardew’s side with Joel Ward and Pape Souare the full-backs with Martin Kelly joining Scott Dann in the centre of defence.

Apart from picking the ball out of the net for Adam Lallana’s goal in the first half, Hennessey had little else to do.

“I had a few kicks and a couple of through-balls but that was about it before the goal,” the 28-year-old said.

He added: “The whole back four has been superb for the whole season and the boys who came in on Saturday did fantastic as well.”
