Seven points off seventh place, with just 10 games left, and our play-offs hopes are looking slimmer than ever.

In years gone by, we've been dreaming of being in no danger of relegation with 10 games to go.

But now we're actually here, it's not entirely clear how best to approach the rest of the season.

I don't want to jump the gun - the play-offs are not yet out of reach, and there's no doubt that we'll keep pushing until we know for certain that we've missed out.

Unless we go on a fairly spectacular run of form, we'll be in a position with nothing to play for within the next couple of games, and with big decisions to be made.

It's no secret that Neal's been looking to sign an extra striker, but with the news that he's just missed out on his first choice, should we be looking to save that money for next season?

There's money to be made from finishing higher up in the table, but almost certainly not enough to justify splashing the cash on a player that's not even necessarily the right fit for us.

Surrey Comet:

Time to develop: Adebayo Azeez should get more game time instead of bringing in another on-loan striker

And that's not to mention the obvious benefits of using this time to bring through our own youth players: a run of games wouldn't do Azeez's development any harm, and it would be good to give a chance to the likes of Beere, Harrison, Fitzpatrick and Oakley.

In the long run, we'll benefit more from giving game time to our own players than those in on loan.

I think Tanner has done more for us than his goalscoring statistics would suggest, but there's little point in continuing to play him every week once our season is winding down.

In reality, we're unlikely to see wholesale changes to the side in the closing weeks.

The benefits of shaking things up are good in theory, but I'd be very surprised if the management team can bring themselves to play anything other than our strongest possible line-up, right up to the final day.

Any signing we're likely to make now is likely to be either a cast-off from another League Two side, or a loanee that we have no chance of keeping in the long-term.

Perhaps a bit of compromise is needed. We'll surely continue to play the strongest available side, but we could be more willing to use youth players off the bench, and there's certainly no need to bring in any more players.

That money could be better used elsewhere - it could be saved for next season, or maybe used to help fund our stadium bid.

Both would be vastly more useful than paying to give some experience to some teenager from the Championship.
