David Connolly wants to end his career playing with AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane again.

The 37-year-old striker played 63 times for Wimbledon between 2001 and 2003 scoring 42 goals in the process.

Now back at the club he describes as dear to his heart, he is backing the #BringTheDonsHome campaign as both a player and a fan.

“It would be great for us to go back to Plough Lane,” he said.

“We haven’t done too badly playing at Kingsmeadow but obviously moving back would be the utopia for the club so fingers crossed that will happen.

“It’s a great story, the phoenix rising from the flames really, so great credit should go to everyone at the club.”

The signing reunited Connolly with former team-mate and Dons’ boss Neal Ardley, who he played alongside during the 2001/02 season.

Emotions run high at residents' association meeting on AFC Wimbledon stadium plans

“When you’ve got someone like Neal in charge, someone who’s been at the club and knows what it means, it would be nice to have a place that’s really our home.”

The old Plough Lane stadium was home to Wimbledon for nearly 80 years before they moved to Selhurst Park in May 1991.

Now the club is targeting a new purpose-built ground a stone’s throw from the old Plough Lane stadium, on the site of the Wimbledon greyhound track.

The proposal is currently under consideration by Merton Council after nearly 13,000 people pledged support for the campaign.

“Obviously for every new stadium there is going to be opposition because of the disruption it will cause but I think it is key for AFC Wimbledon to be playing in Wimbledon.

“From my point of view, and the club, it would be brilliant for us to be back there and I’m sure it would kick the club on.”
