After admitting he went brave at Oxford United, AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley is not sure he will be doing the same when Cambridge United visit the Cherry Red Records stadium this weekend.

Dons lined up at the Kassam stadium last weekend with a front three of Matt Tubbs, Adebayo Akinfenwa and Adebayo Azeez, and the fact the League Two match finished 0-0 left Ardley surprised on two fronts.

Now Sean Rigg’s return from suspension could be the deciding factor behind how brave Ardley is feeling come Saturday.

He said: “Prior to the York City game, Rigg and [George] Francomb had looked a bit jaded – I said in my programme notes that being the winger in a 4-4-2 formation is the most demanding and they have played since the start of the season.

“Rigg’s suspension for Oxford gave me a chance to have a look at playing three up front when I had nothing to lose.

“I told them that they needed to put in a shift to help out the team defensively, and it was probably the tightest we’ve looked all season.

AFC Wimbledon: Pupils get inspired to pen letters to their Dons heroes

“If you look at our performance at Oxford, as a Wimbledon fan or part of the group, you’ll see that they haven’t had an attempt or troubled James Shea and we’ve had the best two chances of the game.

“To play three forwards and draw 0-0 is strange, but the boys have put in a fantastic shift after five games in two weeks.”

He added: “I have watched Cambridge United, and I have done my homework.

“I’m yet to decide on what to do, I’ll watch the lads in training and see how we go.”

Despite illness sweeping through the club, Ardley’s only injury concern surrounds Andy Frampton, who is due to have a scan on his ankle today [Thursday].
