Dons boss Neal Ardley has slammed his team’s schoolboy errors and demanded they take responsibility for themselves once they cross the white line.

After the ding-dong 4-4 League Two draw at Carlisle United on Saturday, Ardley was disappointed for more reasons than one.

He was particularly scathing about the defending at the corner that led to United’s equaliser for 2-2 in first half injury time.

Ardley’s frustrations could raise their head again this weekend when Dons go to Accrington Stanley – a side that thrives on set pieces.

He said: “Against Carlisle we once again failed to kill a game off and did not do it, again.

“Then with 30 seconds of the first half to go, we have a throw on and within 10 seconds schoolboy organisation gifts them a corner.

“Then we decide it would be a good idea to not pick up a Carlisle man in the box for 17 seconds, and he taps it into the back of the net.”

He added: “It’s about taking responsibility – we have two experienced centre backs. What would you expect of a 34-year-old centre back? You’d expect him to talk and say ‘Who’s marking him? What are we doing?’

“It’s hard for us staff, because we feel like we’re playing the game for them from the dugout, and we shouldn’t have to do that.

“We do so much work on set pieces in training, over and over again, but come 3pm, there is not much the manager can do.”

Dons went to Accrington Stanley in the final game of last season, and found themselves 3-0 down before battling back with two late goals.

However, most concerning for Ardley will be Accrington’s reliance on set pieces – two of their three goals last time round came from corners.

Ardley said: “It’ll be tough and James [Beattie] has them working hard.

“We don’t have a good record against them, and it’s the sort of place that if your mentality is not right, if you don’t do your set pieces you can find yourself in trouble.”

On a positive note, Ardley is hoping to welcome back George Francomb (toe) from injury this weekend, while Andy Frampton (ankle) played 70 minutes for the U21s in mid-week, and Jack Smith (knee) remains in light training.

Meanwhile, Ross Worner has joined Woking on a month’s loan.
