Hampton & Richmond Borough trialist Alan Bray has told boss Mark Harper he is worth a punt and will prove it to him by the time the Ryman Premier League kicks-off.

The former Sutton United defender has been training with the Beavers this summer and was in action in Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat to his former club.

Bray had a brief spell with Kingstonian at the end of last term and is currently without a club, but he is out to make an impression at the Beveree to resurrect a promising career that has been blighted by knee injuries.

“Mark has offered me a deal which I haven’t signed yet, but I’m going to see how it goes,” he said.

“It wasn’t the sort of deal I was looking for, but beggars can’t be choosers I guess.

“I’m not fit at the moment and I guess the manager is only covering his back if my injuries become a problem again.

“It is up to me to prove to him I can play 10 games without picking up an injury and then hopefully we can talk about an improved offer and sort a deal then.

“I played my first full 90 minutes in God knows how long on Tuesday and I was praying for the manager to take me off.  I couldn’t breathe it was so hot.

“That is something I need to work on and hopefully I’ll have proved myself come the start of the season.”

Another player still facing an uncertain future is former Brentford defender Lewis Ferrel, who was a second half substitute for the Beavers on Tuesday night.

The club announced last week that he had switched to Blue Square South Boreham Wood, but the move has hit a snag over the amount of compensation Hampton are entitled to.

“Lewis had an option on his contract to be with us a second season, but he declined our offer because he wanted to stay in the Blue Square South,” said Harper.

“Because of that we would still be entitled to some money for him.

“Once Boreham Wood found that out, they have basically been messing him about. We could just let him go, but every little bit of money counts at the moment.

“We’re waiting on them now.”

Hampton signed Gary Holloway on Tuesday night and Harper is expected to trim his squad in the next fortnight ready for the season opener against Hastings United.

“Everything is a bit disjounted because the likes of Billy Jeffries, James Simmonds and Paul Johnson have been away on holiday,” he said.

“I’ve got a few people I need to make a decision on in the next couple of weeks and then we’ll be good to go.”
