Why is it that so often we build up our sporting heroes, only to eventually knock them down?

If it was possible, this thought may have crossed the mind of the miniature statue of Andy Murray – built out of Lego building blocks – as it stood in Wimbledon Park on Sunday as fans queued up overnight for the first day of the tennis championships.

The 3ft model which weighs 12kg was built by Duncan Titmarsh, a man who holds the rare distinction of being the only Lego certified professional in the UK.

Mr Titmarsh built the model in six days, using 13,000 bricks in only six different colours and even managed to add the Scot’s trademark Fred Perry clothing, a tennis racquet and a ball.

Here’s hoping that Mr Titmarsh will be able to build a big, golden trophy for Lego Andy to commemorate a historic triumph by the real Murray, who is bidding to reach his first Wimbledon final on Sunday, July 3.
