An energetic group of local golf-playing pensioners has raised over £30,000 in eight years - and the total is still rising.

This year’s Veterans’ Open competition, played for a replica of the iconic Clare Jug trophy, attracts a full house of 80 competitors of men in their 70s each year. All play off a 28 handicap.

Co-organiser Arthur Lyddall, who lives in Sanderstead, said: “We would not have been able to raise so much without the generosity of all the various donors of prizes over the years, with many companies and individuals consistently offering marvellous gifts.

“We have a fantastic team of people to work with at Addington Court GC, who are tremendously supportive and helpful whenever we suggest a fundraising event, and every year, Crown Golf – the owners of Addington Court – have donated a year’s free membership of the club as a prize.

“The invaluable support given by the Captains of Addington Court Ladies’ Club and Frank's non-golfing wife Barbara in helping to host the Competition each year also contributes to the success of the event.”

Clint Whittaker, General Manager of Addington Court Golf Centre, said: “The veterans at Addington Court are special people.

"They have moved mountains to raise so much money, and Arthur Lyddall is a powerhouse of action and organisation.”
