Worcester Park's Fuller aiming high

Worcester Park racing driver Howard Fuller has set his sights firmly on a Formula Two test drive after securing a debut race win at Rockingham.

The 17-year-old Brooklands College student clinched top spot in his RacingLine-run Golf GTI last month in a one-off appearance in the Volkswagen Racing Cup last month.

Fuller is currently lying 8th in the driver’s standings for the Formula Palmer Audi Championship and finishing in the top six come the end of the series, would secure a dream shot at an F2 drive.

He is 20 points off sixth place in the current table with 11 rounds remaining and he believes the confidence he has gained from his success in Northamptonshire can lead to bigger and better things.

“The FPA is at Rockingham at the end of August so we thought it would be a good idea to get some practise and it turned into a great weekend,” he said.

“It was brilliant to get on the podium and to win my first race was even more special.

“It has given me a lot more confidence to take into the second half of the season.

“I’m aiming for the top six to get that F2 test and we will be going all out for it over the next 11 rounds.

“There is plenty of time to catch the guys ahead of me. I’m one of only a handful of drivers to have finished every race. Providing I keep doing that I reckon we can get there.”

Fuller finished seventh and 12th in the last two rounds of the Formula Palmer Audi championship at Oulton Park, but earned a lot of respect in the process.

“The first race went really well but it started raining for the second, which made a huge difference,” he added.

“I was the only driver who opted to stay on slicks, because I thought it might dry out. I didn’t finish well but a lot of people were just surprised I kept the car on the track.

“It was an experience I think I’ll benefit from.”
