Former Bees keeper eyeing loan move

Reading’s goalkeeper Ben Hamer has described being a face in the crowd at Griffin Park over the weekend as a coincidence.

Boss Andy Scott has made no secret of his desire to recruit a new shotstopper on-loan - with Derby County loanee Lewis Price his only fit senior keeper - and is hopeful of landing a new face ahead of Saturday’s clash with Walsall.

Hamer, currently turning out for the Royals reserves, enjoyed a season-long loan spell with the Bees last season that ended with lifting the League Two title.

He admitted this week he was looking at getting a temporary move away from the Madjeski Stadium lined up in the new year, but reckons it is unlikely he will move before that.

“I had a free weekend so I thought I’d come down and watch the boys. A mate was playing for Millwall aswell, so me being there was just coincidence,” he said on Wednesday.

“I’m looking at getting out on loan, but probably not until January. Coming to Brentford depends on if they come in for me and also if anyone else does.

“There is nothing lined up at the moment and if anything does happen it probably won’t be until the new year.”

The Bees entertain the Saddlers at the weekend looking to build on Tuesday’s 5-2 FA Cup first round replay triumph over Gateshead.

Brentford will face Chris Hutchings’ men again a week later for a place in the third round of the cup, but Scott insists the prospect of winning three points is all that is grabbing his attention.

“We’ll concentrate on Walsall in the league now and only worry about the second round of the cup when it comes around,” he added.

“I hate to disappoint Brentford fans, but we are not going to win the FA Cup.

“We will attempt to win every game we play in the competition and do our best to do that, but now it takes a back seat as we have two big games against Walsall and Wycombe.”
