Surrey were given a real fright before wrapping up a 128-117 Middleton Cup victory over Berkshire at Shirley Park on Saturday.
Beaten in last week’s opener at Middlesex, Surrey appeared to be in control for most of the match and were 26 shots ahead after 15 ends.
But Berkshire battled back to reduce Surrey’s lead to three shots with three ends to play, before Surrey provided the necessary response.
Three rinks were desperately close with two going to Surrey by two and one shot respectively and the other to Berkshire by just one shot.
Good performances by the rinks of Dennis Hennessy and Steve Tuohy were the foundation stone of the win which brought Surrey a welcome 18 points to Berkshire’s four.
Surrey move up to second in the table of five counties, and now play at home, again at Shirley Park BC, on Saturday against Oxfordshire CBA, who are the only unbeaten team in the group.
They are in the driving seat having only played one game so far but the group is very much open to any county who can string a few wins together.
