Adebayo Akinfenwa admitted the League Two play-off against Accrington Stanley is in the balance, but reckons AFC Wimbledon have the squad ethos to reach Wembley.

Tom Beere’s last gasp strike sealed a dramatic 1-0 win on Saturday night, giving the Dons the slightest of advantages going into Wednesday night’s second leg.

Whoever comes through the contest will face Plymouth Argyle at Wembley on Bank Holiday Monday for the right to play League One football next season.

Saturday night encounter was a close affair with few chances and little to separate the two sides.

However, after Dons boss Neal Ardley introduced Akinfenwa mid-way through the second half, the tide turned in the hosts favour.

Akinfenwa rattled the woodwork, and then had a hand in fellow sub Beere’s late winner.

The Beast said: “Our goalkeeping coach has a saying “Team to start, squad to finish” and the win over Accrington Stanley embodied that so much.

“Everyone who knows me, knows I do not like sitting on the bench, but sometimes you have to – and we have such a quality squad.

“Lyle Taylor and Tom Elliott wore them into the ground and we [Akinfenwa, Beere and Adebayo Azeez] came on to take advantage – Rhys Murphy did not even get on and that shows the quality we have.

“And when we’re given the opportunity we try to take it, and that shows that the squad ethos is massive.”

He added: “We have the lead but it is still in the balance, so we have to do what we did on Saturday, and more, to see it through.”
