Brentford picked up a vital win with a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday.

After a patchy run of form in the Championship it was a welcome return to winning ways for the Bees.

In truth it was a scrappy game, but after going ahead early in the second half the visitors never looked like losing.

During a cagey opening period Sam Saunders had an early chance when his cross come shot was plucked out of its path to the top corner by Dorus de Vries.

Forest's first chance came after they won the ball in midfield and Federico Macheda raced away, but he was closely watched by Harlee Dean and his shot hit the side netting.

Maxime Colin came close for the Bees, cutting in from the right and seeing his shot from close range blocked by de Vries.

A counter-attack then saw Saunders presented with one man to beat, but he snatched at his shot and it sailed over the bar.

Smith reaction: Players put right the recent wrongs with win at Nottingham Forest

As the second half re-started Ryan Woods found himself in space on the right and sent in a dangerous ball across the six yard box.

The Bees took the lead only three minutes into the second half after both de Vries and Kelvin Wilson failed to deal with a long ball and substitute Lasse Vibe nipped in to poke the ball past both into an open goal.

After Forest won a free kick, Gary Gardner's ambitious shot from 30 yards was easily taken by David Button.

It became end to end stuff when Brentford won a free kick on the edge of Forest's box. After his shot was blocked a deflection set up a five on one chance for the home side, but a great covering tackle by Alan Judge denied them.

Brentford doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Nico Yennaris scored from close range after a corner on the right.

The Bees wrapped up things with a composed finish from substitute Sergi Canos who found the bottom right hand corner from the left hand side of the box.
