The new boss of Carshalton Athletic does not intend to undo the groundwork of his predecessor.

Chris McGinn’s first game in charge ended all square after a 1-1 draw at home to Chatham Town.

He had only been recruited on Thursday following the departure of the sacked Matt Howard.

Howard had steadied a Robins ship that had finished just three points above the Ryman Division One South, taking them to within four points of the play-offs.

Now McGinn has taken over, looking to build on that success.

He said: “I didn't want to come in and undo all the previous good work done by [former manager] Matt Howard, but I'll slowly be introducing my philosophy and values as I work with the players more.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me to be at a club that also has something going on at every level of the game."

His first point as Robins boss keeps them in the top 10, but the club now sits six points outside the play-offs.

"I was pleased with the players when you consider the small amount of time I've known them," said McGinn.

"They've already begun to respond well to my small amount of input and, for me, the signs look good moving forward."

Midfielder Mickel Miller put Carshalton into the lead with his fifth of the season, only for the visitors to equalise 10 minutes before half-time.

Ex-Robins striker Austin Gacheru almost haunted his old club by crashing a second-half free kick against the crossbar, while Carshalton subs Kingsley Aikhionbare and Ryan Healy both forced good saves from the Town goalkeeper late on.

McGinn, who has coached at the likes of Chelsea, Fulham and Arsenal, said: “Strength in depth for any squad is important and I thought the two lads off the bench made a real impact.”

Carshalton Athletic's next game is a trip to Walton Casuals on Saturday.
