Brentford star Jota could be in line for a Championship return next week to hand former head coach Lee Carsley's replacement an added boost after a three-month injury lay-off following ankle surgery.

Spanish midfielder scored on his comeback in a 4-1 behind closed doors friendly win over a Tottenham Hotspur XI at the club's Jersey Road training ground on Monday.

Sergi Canos (two) and Saturday's last-gasp hero Philipp Hofmann netted the other goals.

Jota, who started running again in early October, was injured in a clash with former Bee midfielder Jonathan Douglas in the 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town on the opening day of the season.

"Really happy and feeling good after going back to play with the team and score again a goal," Jota tweeted.

Brentford are expected to announce a new head coach this week after Carsley confirmed he would be stepping back to assist Kevin O'Connor with the development squad after his brief spell at the helm.

The former Everton midfielder became the club's most successful manager statistically speaking as he claimed five wins and a draw from his nine games in charge.

The 41-year-old had appeared the most reluctant head coach in the club's history when he took charge in the wake of Marinus Dijkhuizen's sacking in September.

But after defeats in his first two games he claimed a 55.5 per cent win ratio - and an October manager of the month award - to put him above any previous Bees boss.

And he reckons the players can keep the momentum going following his departure.

"It has been a massive effort by the players. They have played to their abilities and they deserve this," said Carsley.

"There is such a spirit and belief within the club and that is nothing a coach can influence.

"You can't coach belief and wanting to win and they have that in bucket loads and it is important they keep that going."
