Brentford Jonathan Douglas' illustrious career at Griffin Park seems to be heading for an inglorious end after being frozen out by head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen.

The 32-year-old, a key factor in the club's success over the past four seasons, was told he is free to leave the club last week and sat out Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Premier League Stoke City.

He was again missing from last night's squad that lost 2-1 at League Two Luton Town and Dijkhuzien spelled out the Irishman had reached the end of the line with the Bees.

“He’s not part of the squad. He's training seperately,” said the manager.

“We decided with Rasmus [Ankersen] and Phil [Giles] that it’s better to move on, for his future, and for Brentford.”

Douglas scored eight goals for Brentford as they secured a Championship promotion play-off berth last term.

He has started 186 games for the Bees, more than he has made for any of his three other permanent clubs.

By contrast, German striker Philipp Hofmann scored his first goal for the club in Tuesday's defeat.

The 22-year-old levelled Luton's opening goal, but Calvin Zola’s 78th minute strike sealed victory for the Hatters.

Dijkhuizen has demanded improvement ahead of Saturday's trip to Premier LEague new boys Norwich City.

And he remained cautious about the prosepct of adding to his squad.

“We have a lot of quality players,” he added.

“And we’ve seen some good things tonight, especially in the second half.

"Saturday I saw a lot of good things so I think we’ve got a lot of quality in the squad.”
