Herne Hill Harriers’ Gavin Johnson-Assoon recorded his greatest success on the national stage in winning a bronze medal at the British Championships.

The 32-year-old’s javelin throw of 64.30m in Birmingham was good enough for third place – a year after he came fifth in the same championship.

His best throw was just 11cm further than fourth-placed Greg Millar.

A clutch of Harriers were represented in the 400m, with Nicholas Atwell progressing to the semi-final stage in which he finished eighth in 48.34secs, following a fifth-place finish in his heat in 47.26secs.

Peter Phillips was fifth in 48.23secs and Isaac Ogunlade seventh in 48.66secs in their respective first round heats, with neither posting qualifying times for the semi-finals.

Blade Ashby ran a season’s best time of 52.55secs for 400m hurdles in his first round heat and Ogunlade was fourth in a later heat in 52.98secs.

Lewis Lloyd was eighth in his 1,500m heat in three minutes 52.45secs.

Sprinter Jonathan Grant was third in his 100m heat in 10.78secs in a race won by Croydon’s James Dasaolu.

Racing in the 5,000m, Stacey Ward was 12th in 16:25.
