Croydon Harrier James Dasaolu insists he will be in peak form once the IAAF World Athletics Championships starts despite finishing second best in the men’s 100m final at British Championships in Birmingham on Sunday.

The 27-year-old European champion was beaten by Enfield & Haringey’s Chijindu Ujah, who posted 10.10 seconds in semi-wet conditions to bag his first domestic title.

Dasaolu recorded 10.24secs, while Ojie Edoburun of Shaftesbury Barnet was third in 10.27secs.

Dasaolu said: “My main objective was to finish in the top two and I did that.

“It’s still seven or eight weeks till the Worlds and time to get some good training in, so I’m positive I can only get better and go forward.

“Everything’s going alright this season. I’d like to run a bit quicker, but with the World Champs [in Beijing, China] being in August, I’ve got time to gain some speed before then but I’m happy.

“I’m racing next in London in a couple of weeks and I’ll have another race as well before that.

"The calibre of British sprinters is high. I got beaten here today so I need to push it on now.”

Meanwhile, clubmate Martyn Rooney faces an anxious wait to see if he will join Dasaolu in Beijing after losing his 400m crown.

The 28-year-old had to settle for equal third with Nigel Levine posting 45.88secs, behind eventual winner Rabah Yousif (45.01secs) and Jarryd Dunn (45.24secs).

He said: “Lack of running played its part, but the guys ahead raced very well.

“Preparations are never perfect, but I was hoping to run faster.”
