Brentford boss Mark Warburton says his men have plenty left in the tank to secure Championship promotion.

The Bees booked a Championship play-off semi-final clash with Middlesbrough thanks to a 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Warburton came under fire from sections of the Griffin Park faithful in the January transfer window for signing only Lewis MacLeod and Jack O’Connell on permanent deals with his side well in the hunt for automatic promotion – let alone the play-offs.

Star performers Moses Odubajo, Alex Pritchard, Jake Bidwell, David Button and Jonathan Douglas have each made 40+ league starts for the club this term.

Harlee Dean, Alan Judge, Toumani Diagouraga, Jota and James Tarkowski starting more than 30 times each.

Warburton, who will leave the club at the end of the play-offs, believes that is much a show of strength as anything else with three matches standing between his men and the top flight.

And he has history on his side to prove it.

“You keep a tight squad, look at Burnley last year and the number of players they used. Many teams have followed suit.

“Smaller, tighter squad brings unity they’re hungry for it. Injuries happen and that is the random nature you cannot control.

“But at the same time, too many players not playing causes you a problem.

“There is dissatisfaction in the ranks and the training intensity drops. They are professional athletes and want to play football.

“If you are training hard every day and not getting the chance of a pathway at least into the 18 at a weekend it is frustrating.

“Imagine you train well for two weeks and you do not make the bus for an away trip, that is tough for any pro to take.

“Get the balance right with the squad size and we have got more than a good enough squad and we are looking forward to the next fixture.

"The squad is fresh.”
