Sutton & Epsom head coach Jeff Parsons has demanded three repeats of the “want and desire” that saw off table toppers Wimbledon last weekend.

A 13-12 win at Beverley Meads completed a league double over the favourites for promotion out of London Division One, and it also blew the title race wide open.

Sutton climbed to third in the table, five points behind Wimbledon and three points behind Chobham, who occupy the only play-off spot.

Parsons’ men had to come from 12-6 behind at the break to overcome their neighbours.

Sam Hurley had Sutton on the scoresheet in the first half, and he kicked the vital conversion after Andy Matthews went over in the second half.

Parsons said: “It was a fantastic performance from the lads, a real show of want and desire.

“When you’re playing a side that scores four tries or more at will in most games, keeping them out in the second half was a superb effort.

“Even when they were camped on our 5m line, we defended in a controlled and disciplined way – it was the most professional show this season.”

He added: “We should have won by more because Ian [Knott] had a perfectly good try ruled out by a referee that made plenty of mistakes.”

Sutton were sitting in second place in the table for a while last weekend until Chobham came from behind to beat Sidcup.

Parsons said: “That shows the title or promotion is not in our hands.

“All we can do is our best in every game, score as many points as possible and make sure we pick up the bonus points.

“Wimbledon play Sidcup on the final weekend, and we need to make sure we show the same want and desire we did last weekend to be in a position to take advantage of any slip up.”

Parsons takes his men to bottom club Basingstoke this weekend, and while a win should be a formality, he is more concerned that the game goes ahead in the first place.

Bottom of the table Basingstoke were beaten 104-0 at home to Havant on March 7, but then gave up a walkover defeat to Twickenham last weekend.

Coming through: Craig Bellringer holds off a Wimbledon lad

“Although we get a bonus point win if they pull out, I don’t know what happens in terms of points. So we need the game to go ahead so we can improve our points difference.

“We’ve also got some momentum, and do not want two weeks off.”

Parsons had been sweating on the fitness of Craig Bellringer and George London after eye-gouging incidents, but both have been cleared to play.
