Brentford boss Mark Warburton insisted his men are not out of the Championship promotion race, providing his men bounce back from defeat at Birmingham City with a win.

The Bees slumped to a 1-0- defeat - care of a James Tarkowski own goal - at the Blues on Saturday after back-to-back wins over AFC Bournemouth and Blackpool.

Tuesday's fine 4-0 triumph over the hapless Tangerines had raised hopes Warburton's men had got their play-off push back on track.

And the manager reckoned that remained the case, particularly given an immediate chance to put things right when Huddersfield Town visit Griffin Park on Tuesday

“We lacked a bit of quality," said Warburton.

"We had a lot of possession, but didn't do much in the final third. We never really tested the keeper more than two or three times."

He added: "Teams are going to gain and drop points and there are a lot to be played for. We have a chance on Tuesday to hopefully correct it."

Birmingham threatened when David Cotterill crossed from right, but James Tarkowski made an important clearance, just ahead of former Bee Clayton Donaldson.

Tarkowski and Toumani Diagouraga were both required to shepherd Donaldson as he latched onto a long ball into the box, with David Button gathering his shot.

Tarkowski was involved at the other end when he headed a Jota corner from the right just wide of the left hand post.

Button then displayed fine reactions as he dived to his right to push away a Donaldson header.

After the Bees won a free kick fully 35 yards out, Alex Pritchard tried his luck, but Darren Randolph made a comfortable save.

Five minutes before half time Birmingham went ahead when Cotterill crossed from the right and as both Donaldson and Tarkowski stooped to try and head the ball, it was touched past Button at his near post by the unfortunate defender.

In added on time a great cross from Stuart Dallas was headed over the bar by Jonathan Douglas when he really should have found the target.

Pritchard looked lively in the early stages of the second half, twice turning in teasing crosses, but both went begging.

After Birmingham broke down the right, Paul Caddis sent in a rasping shot which flew just wide of the post.

The home side really should have doubled their lead when Donaldson touched cross from the right into the path of Demarai Gray, who blasted over an open goal from ten yards out.

Some lovely link up play saw Dallas and Pritchard combine with Jon Toral on the edge of Birmingham's box, before the latter's cross went teasingly past the back post.

Birmingham came close again when first Cotterill's long range effort was tipped behind by Button. From the corner, Gray shot just over the bar.

The Bees came close when Pritchard broke down the left and picked out substitute Alan Judge on the edge of the box, but his shot was wide of the post.

Birmingham's Stephen Gleeson was shown a straight red card after he fouled Pritchard as he burst through then kicked the midfielder as they tangled on the ground.
